Why should parents teach their children about reproduction and chastity? How can they do this appropriately? Satan`s plan is to deceive as many of us as possible to prevent us from returning to live with Heavenly Father. One of the most harmful things He can do is to incite us to break the law of chastity. He is cunning and powerful. He wants us to believe that it is not a sin to break this law. Many people have been deceived. We must protect ourselves from bad influences. My dear brothers and sisters, do we live according to these scriptures? Do we clearly understand the seriousness of sexual sins? Do we constantly emphasize the blessings that come from obeying this law? I repeat, like all prophets before me, that there is a standard of virtue and chastity, and everyone is supposed to abide by it. What the Lord tells you, He says to all: « Ye must constantly practice virtue and holiness before me » (D&C 46:33). Peace can come to those who have broken the law of chastity.
The Lord tells us, « When the evil one turns away from all his sins he has committed and keeps all my statutes, . Not all of his transgressions he has committed will be mentioned to him » (Ezekiel 18:21–22). Peace comes only through forgiveness. I pray that all future missionaries will reflect on why this commandment is so important and how keeping the law of chastity can bless their lives. Understanding these things will give them additional strength in the struggle against the many temptations that plague our young people today. The LDS Church attaches great importance to the law of chastity. The obligation to live the law of chastity is required for baptism, and observance is required to obtain a temple recommendation. Not only does Satan encourage us to dress indecently, but he also encourages us to think about immoral or inappropriate thoughts. It does so with images, movies, stories, jokes, music, and dances that suggest immoral actions. The law of chastity requires that our thoughts and actions be pure.
The prophet Alma said, « If we are judged by God, « our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this terrible state we will not dare to look up to our God » (Alma 12:14). The law of chastity is one of the covenants that the Church of Latter-day Saints promises to keep under oath at the temple endowment ceremony. All these consequences are real, but they are not the end of all chastity. Each of these consequences has a chance, albeit a small one, of being circumvented. There is no 100% guarantee that you will suffer any of these consequences if you break the law of chastity, so there is always a chance that you will « get away with it ». But the law of chastity applies to everyone, so there must be other reasons to maintain it. How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be humble in clothing, language, and behavior? God wanted His spirit children to be born into families so that they could be properly cared for and educated. We, like Adam and Eve, must provide physical bodies to these spirit children. The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have stated, « We declare that the means by which mortal life is created are determined by God » (« The Family: Proclamation to the World, » Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 1995, 102). God has commanded us to have sex only in marriage between a man and a woman. This commandment is called the law of chastity.
But I recognize that there may be some, even now in the sound of my voice, for which the advice to prepare and prevent is too late. You may already be deeply entangled in a grave sin. If this is the case, there is no choice but to repair your life and repent of your sins. I would suggest five important things you can do to return to a state of moral purity. Although the violation of the law of chastity is considered a grave sin, the one who has violated the law of chastity can repent and receive God`s forgiveness. There is an old saying that it is better to prepare and prevent than to repair and repent. As is true for the law of chastity. The first line of defense to keep us morally clean is to prepare ourselves to resist temptation and prevent ourselves from falling into sin. The « why » of keeping the law of chastity is a topic that Elder Bednar has also spoken about in recent years. In his June 1998 Education Week talk, « Teach Them to Understand, » Elder Bednar spoke of the importance of understanding the « why » of the gospel commandments.
Activities considered a violation of the law on chastity include both adultery and fornication, as well as general behavior. .
